Every now and then you get a take that's just magic. You know it as it's happening, everything clicks and you've just got to hang on for dear life and try not to make any big mistakes. I've probably had a handful of these in my whole life and Wings of Desire was surely one.
I was playing a cherry red Silvertone from the fifties that belonged to an indie film star from the nineties. It sort of drifted into my life and then drifted back out. But on this take it just sang. I'm realizing now that for as long as we worked on this record, this song is just the live take of the band with vocals. I'm glad we knew better than to mess with the magic.
It was Ian's idea at the start of this project for him to sing a song of mine and for me to sing a song of his. This is the one he brought and it truly is a beast. I asked to change one lyric, I don't think ID will mind me saying. He had originally written "She been good to me," which is a beautiful line but I thought I'd never say that I don't think I can sing it. I asked if I could sing "She is good to me" and he got a playful smirk on his face, You don't want to sing it 'She done been good to me'?"
lyrics
Golden angel
Golden wings
Golden eyes
In the city of golden lights
Streets blacker than white
I go to see her forthrightly
She is good to me
Golden angel
Golden wings
Golden eyes
In the city of golden lights
